Summer Camp Head Counselor Job Description

PAY: $14/hour

STATUS: Seasonal (part-time)

HOURS & AVAILABILITY: 

  • 20-25 hours per week

  • Camp Dates: Monday-Friday, June 23 - August 22, 2025

  • Camp Time: 9am-12:30 pm (arriving 30 min. early and staying 15-30 min after)

  • Training will occur 1-3 weeks before camp begins for approximately 3 days

Job Summary

A Summer Camp Head Counselor works on a seasonal part-time basis facilitating weekly summer camps.  A Head Counselor oversees camp climbers, implements weekly camp schedules, and gives exceptional customer service to participants and parents.  Head Counselors help create an exciting, playful, and safe environment while instilling a love for climbing in our campers!  We are seeking self-motivated and enthusiastic applicants to join the Coeur Climbing team! 

Hiring Timeline

We will be collecting applications through March, and start the interview process in the beginning of April. We hope to hire for these positions by mid-April.

 

Job Responsibilities

Administration

- Instruct and lead weekly Summer Camps

- Give feedback and direction to camp counselors when needed

- Work with the GM to identify camp needs

- Assist in daily setup and breakdown of camp 

 

Customer Service and Facility Obligations 

  • Be a role model to cultivate a positive community consistent with Coeur’s mission  

  • Oversee Camp Counselors

  • Communicate with GM on Summer Camp schedule and feedback

  • Develop camp ownership among Counselors to continually grow positive camp culture

  • Enforce Coeur Climbing policies in a friendly, patient, and respectful manner

 

Weekly Recurring Tasks

 
  • Bring energy and excitement to camp each week

  • Lead games and activities 

  • Gain awareness of the skill level and needs of each staff member and camper

  • Interact with parents before and after camp

  • Ensure setup and breakdown of camp is completed daily

  • Lead weekly feedback meeting with Camp Counselors

  • Assist operations staff with summer camp gear and front desk summer camp needs

 

Job Requirements

 
  • Must be 16 or older

  • Must have at least 2 years climbing experience and show a strong enthusiasm for climbing

  • Ability to work with a large group of kids, ages 5-14 

  • Experience with coaching, programming, or facilitating required

  • Experience working with children is preferred, but not required

  • Ability to put immediate needs of participants first 

  • Ability to command respect, enforce safe climbing practices, recognize unsafe conditions, and discuss any concerns with fellow counselors and campers in a professional manner

 

Environmental and Physical Demands

  • Comfortable working in a loud environment on a regular basis 

  • Comfortable speaking in front of and providing instruction to large groups

  • Comfortable working at height, moving up and down a climbing wall

  • Comfortable continuously standing and walking on unstable and uneven surfaces for long periods of time

  • Able to repeatedly lift, move, and carry up to 50 lbs of weight on a regular basis

  • Able to balance, kneel, pull, push, and grasp objects as needed

  • Have the visual acuity to assess details such as harness buckles, knots, and belay technique
